It’s easy to get caught up in the holiday season! All the parties containing holiday cookies, glasses of egg nog or latkes with sour cream can easily strain our waistlines! Here are some tips to help ease through the holidays without depriving yourself and/or indulging with the extra order of guilt.

  1. Eat 20-30 grams protein for breakfast! Start your day off right to help with glucose control and hunger cravings later in the day.

  2. Hydrate with electrolytes especially if you know alcohol will be involved later.

  3. EXERCISE! Start your day with a 30 minute HIIT workout to help curb those calories that will be coming later. Another option is to make sure you walk for 10-15 minutes after your meals to help with digestion and glucose control.

  4. Pause before taking seconds! It takes a few minutes for your stomach to get the "I’m getting full" signal to your brain. After finishing your first helping, take a 10-minute break. Make conversation. Drink some water. Then recheck your appetite. You might realize you are full or want only a small portion of seconds.

  5. Before going to the party, eat something that is high in protein, fat or fiber. This will make sure you don’t arrive to the party famished. Good examples are drinking kombucha with chia seeds, eat some apple slices with nut butter, or eat rolled up turkey/cheese before you head out.

  6. While at the party be sure to have half your plate full of veggies and fruits! Just make sure they aren’t slathered in creamy sauces or sugar.

  7. Make sure your dish to pass is one that is nutritious! For example, bring a lentil salad, veggie tray designed in a festive theme, or a fruit salad.

  8. Don’t stand around the buffet table while socializing. Move away from the food to inhibit mindless eating.

  9. Remember, don’t feel guilt! If you overindulged just make sure your next meal is healthy and you incorporate exercise into your routine with lots of water!

Wishing you and your loved ones a safe and happy holiday season!
